CHAPTER 19 OF 29

Eudometrics

Making human outcomes visible without confusing a person with a score.

Measure enough to learn from consequences; preserve enough complexity to remember whose lives the measurements describe.

  • 01
Eudometrics measures dimensions of flourishing and their distribution across people and time.
  • 02
The Eudometric Hypothesis proposes discovering underlying dimensions through converging evidence.
  • 03
Measurement, causal explanation, and moral judgment remain distinct tasks.

The need for a better instrument panel

A society already measures selected things: output, employment, costs, attendance, grades, and administrative activity. Those measures influence what institutions attend to and reward. Eudometrics asks what becomes visible when the instrument panel also includes agency, meaning, health, relationships, developmental opportunity, trust, and the quality of everyday environments.

The purpose is not to create a final number that settles whether a life is good. It is to detect improvement, deterioration, neglected needs, and tradeoffs that conventional measures can conceal. A richer account can show an institution becoming more efficient while its participants become more exhausted or less able to direct their lives.

A multidimensional account

The field spans several connected families of outcomes:

  • Bodily and psychological conditions: health, functioning, distress, recovery, and material security.
  • Developmental capacity: learning, mastery, creativity, self-direction, and access to further opportunity.
  • Relational life: family conditions, friendship, support, trust, cooperation, and belonging.
  • Civic and institutional life: fairness, integrity, responsiveness, participation, and access to justice.
  • Meaning and culture: worthwhile activity, purpose, expression, cultural participation, and aesthetic experience.
  • Environmental and intergenerational conditions: safety, mobility, ecological durability, and the opportunities inherited by future people.

An evaluation should select dimensions relevant to its question and examine their distribution. Population averages can improve while a subgroup suffers. Immediate benefits can rely on deferred costs. More recorded activity can accompany less genuine capability. A dashboard must keep these possibilities legible.

The Eudometric Hypothesis

The Eudometric Hypothesis proposes that consequential dimensions of psychosocial life leave multiple traces: in language, accounts of experience, behavior, relationships, institutions, and health outcomes. By examining these together, inquiry may identify more coherent underlying dimensions of flourishing and impairment than any one discipline supplies alone.

Factor analysis and related methods can investigate patterns of covariance, suggesting candidate constructs such as agency, belonging, or meaning. This is a proposal to discover and test a structure, not proof that one universal structure exists. A statistical factor can reflect the questions selected, common methods, or unequal conditions. Its interpretation must be examined through independent evidence, replication, and comparison across settings.

Quantifying the qualitative

An apparently abstract concept becomes tractable through careful decomposition. “Purpose” might involve experienced significance, sustained commitment, a sense of direction, and opportunities to contribute. Interviews can help determine whether these components capture what people mean. Scales and observed patterns can then test whether the proposed construct is coherent and useful.

“Ikigai per capita” expresses an ambition to make meaningful life a public concern. It is not an established universal statistic. Its measurement would need to distinguish purpose from pleasure, conformity, income, and prestige; examine cultural interpretation; and show that changes reflect something consequential. Difficulty measuring a good does not make it unreal, and ease of measurement does not make a proxy adequate.

Three boundaries that prevent category errors

First, describing a pattern does not establish a cause. A strong association between social participation and well-being does not by itself tell us what a participation mandate would do. Second, identifying a dimension does not determine how highly it should be valued. Third, assessment of a person or group does not confer authority to intervene in their lives.

Aretometrics addresses a related question: how well people and systems perform relevant functions. A teacher's competence and implementation quality are distinct from students' learning and well-being. Keeping these levels separate helps explain why a promising intervention failed instead of merely recording that its target was missed.

Measurement that can correct itself

Measures need review when people adapt to being measured. Graduation rates can rise through lower standards; complaint counts can fall because people fear reporting; apparent civic harmony can conceal suppressed disagreement. Use multiple indicators, inspect unusual improvements, incorporate lived accounts, and permit independent challenges to the criteria themselves.

Composite indices may be useful summaries if their weights and sensitivity are visible. They should not conceal severe harm or turn equal civic standing into a tradable quantity. The better instrument panel expands judgment. It does not relieve decision makers of explaining what they chose to value.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE APPLICATION

Two schools, two improvements

One school raises test results while students report greater anxiety and less curiosity. Another improves belonging while leaving gaps in foundational knowledge. Eudometrics resists declaring either an unqualified success. It examines duration, affected groups, implementation, and the possibility of combining effective elements. The purpose is better education, not the victory of whichever school selects the most flattering metric.
