CHAPTER 25 OF 29

Techno-Eudemics & Eutechnics

Designing technology to strengthen attention, agency, capability, and shared life.

Technology should be designed around the capacities and forms of life it cultivates, not only the behavior it can capture or the tasks it can perform.

  • 01
Techno-Eudemics examines technology's relationship to human and collective flourishing.
  • 02
Eutechnics concerns the practical design of technologies that serve that purpose.
  • 03
Better tools should strengthen agency and capability while remaining accountable for dependency and wider effects.

The technological branch of flourishing

Technology changes more than efficiency. It shapes attention, habits, relationships, access, expectations, and the distribution of power. Techno-Eudemics brings those effects into the definition of success. A technically impressive product can still degrade the people and institutions that use it.

Eutechnics is the practical design and implementation side of this inquiry. It asks how interfaces, incentives, algorithms, infrastructure, and operating arrangements can support worthwhile human outcomes. Entelect is one proposed architecture within this wider project, not the name for every possible flourishing-oriented technology.

Attention as a developmental resource

Attention is the medium through which people learn, create, relate, and deliberate. A product optimized for repeated engagement may capture that resource without improving the user's life. The Coactualist question is what the pattern of use makes possible over time and whether users retain practical control over it.

Design might support concentration, reduce unnecessary interruption, make stopping easy, or help people move from preparation into meaningful activity. The appropriate measure is not automatically time spent. A tool that helps someone finish a task and return to the world may be more successful than one that keeps them interacting indefinitely.

Augmentation and the development of capability

An educational tool should help a learner gain understanding and independence. A professional assistant should improve judgment and execution while keeping responsibility intelligible. A civic platform should support informed participation rather than merely generate reactions. These aims require evaluation of what users can do with and, where relevant, without the tool.

Automation can remove needless burden, but it can also remove opportunities for learning or hide consequential decisions. Eutechnics asks which tasks should be delegated, which capacities should remain practiced, and how people can inspect, revise, or take over the process. The answer depends on the activity and its stakes.

The Eudocircuit

The Eudocircuit names a flourishing-oriented feedback process: understand conditions, design an intervention, observe consequences, and revise. It connects measurement to learning and responsible improvement. A system must be able to discover that its initial proxy for success was inadequate.

This includes effects outside the immediate user interaction. A service may feel beneficial individually while changing institutional expectations or collective behavior in undesirable ways. Deployment at scale creates new questions about access, concentration, environmental costs, and dependency. Success in a small demonstration does not settle those questions.

Powerful environments and meaningful choice

Immersive systems, adaptive media, and future enhancement technologies could create new settings for learning and expression. They could also make withdrawal from shared reality unusually attractive or create subtle forms of behavioral control. Their consequences should be investigated without assuming either inevitable liberation or inevitable decline.

Choice requires understandable purposes, usable controls, and realistic alternatives. A technology should not quietly change from assistance into compulsory infrastructure. Public services should preserve accessible ways to participate when someone cannot or does not wish to use a particular digital system.

Stewardship of the technological frontier

Promethean ambition encourages invention and the expansion of human possibility. Überhumanism asks what forms of becoming deserve pursuit. Eutechnics connects them to design decisions and observed results. Greater capability is a reason to make purpose and responsibility more explicit.

The developmental criterion applies to the institutions building technology as well as their products. Funding, ownership, incentives, procurement, and oversight shape which outcomes designers are rewarded for producing. A humane interface cannot fully compensate for an underlying business or governance model that depends on undermining agency.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE APPLICATION

An AI tutor that teaches independence

A tutor adapts explanations and practice to a learner's progress. It gradually reduces assistance, asks the learner to explain reasoning, and checks transfer to unfamiliar problems. It also makes uncertainty and escalation to a teacher clear. Evaluation includes learning and independence rather than only completion or satisfaction. When help becomes dependency, the design needs revision.
